The Family-Based Mental Health Program

The Family Based Mental Health (FBMH) program is a voluntary mental health treatment for children and adolescents with serious emotional and/or behavioral disorders. FBMH is for children who may be place out of their home if intense in-home services are not provided. FBMH is meant to serve all members of the family and includes parents, siblings, and caregivers. In addition to family and individual therapy, FBMH can provide 24 hour, 7 day a week crisis intervention to decrease the possibility of a child needing to leave home due to a crisis situation.

What Are the Goals of FBMH Services?

  • Keep children and families intact and in their home
  • Strengthen and keep the family together
  • Improve family communication and stress management skills
  • Help families learn and improve problem-solving and coping skills
  • Teach parenting skills and new ways to manage children's behaviors
  • Advocate for your child in the school and community
  • Help your family get other needed services

How Are FBMH Services Provided?

FBMH is a voluntary program for families and includes individual and family therapy, couples or sibling services, crisis management, and family support services, as needed.

The services are team delivered by a mental health professional with a masters degree in human service and their partner, a mental health worker with a bachelors degree as well in human services.

Treatment goals are established with the family and the treatment team. Family sessions must be held weekly with additional sessions scheduled per the treatment needs of the individual and family.

Family members are expected to actively participate in assessment, treatment planning, development of treatment goals, and ongoing review of treatment progress.

Eligibility for the Program

To receive FBMH your child must:
  • Have serious emotional and/or behavioral difficulties
  • Be at-risk of needing treatment in a psychiatric hospital, residential treatment facility (RTF) or other out-of-home setting
  • Need an intense mental health service. Typically, other types of mental health services should be tried prior to FBMH
  • Have at least one adult family member or caregiver who is willing to participate in the child's treatment
